On Writing Job Descriptions

I spent the past few days in writing detailed Job Descriptions for a few positions I’m hiring for Design at my organisation. I realise how tough it is to craft it well.

Every Design Leader speaks of building a right culture in their organisation. Culture is built by people. It is essential that we find people who who fit into that culture.

Often due to poorly written Job Descriptions, we fail to attract the right people. In my opinion, writing a job description is a Design Exercise in itself.

You have a problem to solve, the JD is your UI and the contents there will convince a person he/she is suitable for it. By virtue of reading (navigating) the applicant is going through an emotional experience.

Setting the context for the company and the team one is hiring for is your first impression to the applicant. The subsequent paragraphs and sections should flow into each other.

A JD has to flow well like a well knit story. One has to be really careful with the words as it drives the experience. The crescendo moments convinces the applicants to apply.

It saddens me when many people apply to jobs without reading JDs properly.

Hiring Managers : Write better Job Descriptions!
Applicants : Read each and every word of the JD!
